What to Expect During Your Visit
We make every effort to ensure that your child’s visit is as pleasant as possible. We try to schedule our appointments in a way that is most convenient for you while making the best use of our time and resources. We generally mix and match sick patient visits and health checks through the day to accommodate as many patients as possible without sacrificing quality of care.
Help Us to Help You
To help minimize your wait time, here are some ways you can help us to be on time and to do our job more efficiently.
- Purpose of your visit. When calling for an appointment, please be specific about the purpose of the visit. Regular health checks take up longer time depending on your child's age, procedures or tests and additional concerns that need to be addressed. Expect about 20 to 30 minutes for these visits. Longer consultation is often necessary for those with complex or chronic problems. These include behavioral problems, new ADHD evaluation, asthma evaluation, children with special needs, weight and nutrition concerns, and those with multiple, usually long-standing, sometimes vague symptoms like recurrent abdominal pain, fatigue or weakness, headaches and poor appetite.
- "By the way" questions. If you call about your child because of acute concerns like sore throat, recent sinus symptoms, earaches or rashes, and then bring up additional concerns or ask that a test be performed only during the visit, that can back up our schedule significantly and affect the rhythm of the office workflow. We offer an "Express Service" for these quick simple visits that can be scheduled throughout the day, but please let us know ahead of time if you have additional concerns or "by the way" questions you want addressed and request a regular appointment.
- Bringing another child. Let us know if you are bringing other children who may need to be seen. We will do our best to see them too but we need to prioritize those who are ready to be seen for their appointments.
- Arriving late. Please call to cancel if you are unable to make your appointment, or if you are running late, with as much notice as possible. Patients who arrive more than 15 minutes late for an appointment may be asked to reschedule their appointment or may have to wait until all those who arrive on time for their appointments are seen.
- No-shows. Failure to keep a scheduled appointment and not canceling is considered to be a “no-show” which is very disruptive to our schedule and inconsiderate of other patients who may not be given their choice of appointment time. “No-shows” may be subject to a charge of a standard office visit, and are not covered by insurance.
- Walk-ins. Please avoid “walk-ins” or “drop-ins” as much as possible. We will try to accommodate you if possible but may have to ask you to come at a later appointment if all those with scheduled visits are ready to be seen. Of course, this does not apply if your child is seriously sick. We do reserve the right to determine what constitutes an urgent sick visit.
- Check-in paperwork. Please arrive a few minutes early for your appointment to get checked in and to take care of any paperwork. Please take advantage of any online forms or paperwork that can be filled ahead of your appointment time.
- Consent by proxy. We cannot provide non-emergent care to any patient not accompanied by someone other than their parents or legal guardian. Please provide written documentation of your consent if you cannot be with your child. If written documentation is not provided, we will attempt to contact you by phone for verbal permission or illnesses that require same-day attention. We will assume that you are giving consent to provide any service we deem necessary and discuss any findings or treatment results to all whom you authorize unless you indicate any limitations in your consent letter.
We strive to give every patient the care and attention you would expect for your own child. However, the ideal situation where everything runs on time, all the time, is not possible. While we all know that winters, Mondays, and after 3:00 pm on school days are the busiest times in Pediatrics, we can get hit anytime with an unexpected high volume of patients or a very sick child who requires more time and attention. Though we know that most of you understand, we too become greatly concerned when delays affect those who scheduled their appointments beforehand and still have to endure long waits. We also cannot fault patients who urgently need to be seen and squeezed in. We try to see all who call on the same day when it is absolutely necessary.
In order to serve you better, we continue to adjust our schedule to accommodate our patients. At times, please know that we may need to prioritize infants and children with urgent needs.
